Genetically engineered organisms should be evaluated and regulated according to their biological properties (phenotypes), rather than according to the genetic techniques used to produce them. The important aspects of using GEMs in bioremediation, such as development of novel strains with desirable properties through pathway construction and the modification of enzyme specificity and affinity, are discussed in detail. Furthermore, laboratory-scale studies with these GEMs provided proof of principle for continuous treatment of TCP-contaminated water in packed bed bioreactors.
